She makes the reader question what†¦show more content†¦There is a contrast within the poem between hope, represented with words like warm, Soul sweetest and the pain of life shown in words like storm gale chillest. There is a battle between hope and the pain of life; it is clear which one comes out on top as hope can still be found through gales and storms. I think the poem is trying to convey that even though things can seem bleak, hope can always pull you through it. Dickinson’s poem ‘I Could Bring You Jewels -- had I a mind to –‘ is similar to ‘Hope is the Thing with Feathers’ in regards to the tone of the poem. It is a joyful, optimistic poem. In ‘I Could Bring You Jewels’, Dickinson is corresponding with an unknown person in a coy, teasing tone. This poem is very different to most of Dickinson’s poetry because unlike many of her other poems she is not discussing death or loneliness and is instead, conversing with someone and seems to be enjoying herself. She is talking to this person about what gift she is going to buy him/her. ‘I could bring You Odors from St. Domingo – Colors -- from Vera Cruz -- Berries of the Bahamas –‘ Although I would not consider Emily Dickinson to be my favourite poet, I found her work intriguing and uniquely eccentric. I was struck by the startling contrast created here when she compares the stillness in the room to ‘’the air/ Between the Heaves of Storms’’ The poem strikingly describes the mental distraction posed by irrelevant details at even the most crucial moments—even at the moment of death. The poem then becomes even more bizarre and more macabre by transforming the tiny, normally disregarded fly into the figure of death itself, as the fly’s wing cuts the speaker off from the light until she cannot â€Å"see to see.† One of the most peculiar aspects of ‘‘I heard a Fly buzz—when I died—...† is the odd introduction of the fly into this environment. Again, the imagery plays a significant role. Flies can often be associated with death and decay and I think that is the message Dickinson was trying to convey by using the image of the fly in this particular poem. It is again linked to ‘I Felt a Funeral in my Brain’ to the psychological deterioration of Dickinson. Ironically, the buzz from the fly seems to be the only sign of life in the entire poem. The passage of death has an unsettling, disconnected tone but is not scary or painful. The poet introduces the idea that death isn’t our salvation; it is simply a state of nothingness. As a result, every year 50 thousand children leave their homes and 2 thousand children commit suicide. The second reason is that this behavior is inherent in every person as a cause of reproducible patterns. The ones, who witnessed their father beat their mother during their childhood, have a higher probability of becoming a family tyrant. Some other problems that are common causes of violence in Russia are male alcoholism, low material security, and unemployment among men. But violence occurs not only in the families of alcoholics, but also in the families of professors, and managers. A couple of years ago in Russia, this problem was not discussed at all; the topic was practically banned. On the basis of information provided by the above-mentioned channel, â€Å"most of women find it to be a taboo topic. In addition, many husbands beat their partners in such a way that no one can see scars and bruises. Therefore most of the physical trauma is being caused to the heads of the victims, which ends with more fetal outcomes. However, the development of this law has begun in 1994, but it was long ignored. At the same time, in the early ‘90s legislatives in many other countries advanced amendments, which were approved and worked very well in preventing fetal outcomes of domestic violence. For example, in Israel as well as American courts, a restraining order is given to victims prohibiting the offender to approach the victim or her resistance. The basis for such a restraining order is not just â€Å"actual acts of violence† but also threats, insults, and scandals. The girl was only 18 years old. Fortunately, she was lucky, and was saved by American doctors, who a year later were able to make a new nose for her. The history of Bibi Aisha affected the whole world, but unfortunately it is far from unique. One day in 2010 a Russian girl named Tatyana Polskaya was returning from work. Approaching the entrance of her building, she saw a young man standing by the entrance with a bottle in his hand. He was not alone; Tatyana said that she noticed someone observing not far from the entrance. When she turned to the young man, he splashed in her face something of the bottle. She ran to a snowdrift and began to wash her face with the snow. As it turned out later, the bottle was full of sulfuric acid. The investigation of her case has hit a dead end; there are no suspects or defendants. Tanya has already had eight operations, but her vision hasn’t been restored. The same year Oksana Serdyuk, who has recently broken up with her former lover, was going home with a new partner. They accidentally met her former partner at the park and talked. He asked permission to escort them to the porch and when they got there, he hit Oksana with a knife directly in her stomach. Her boyfriend rushed to defend his girlfriend, but was stabbed in the lung. Then the former partner calmly walked over to Oksana, raised her head by pulling her hair and began to slash her neck. A passing car, which flashed its headlights, saved them and the attacker fled. As it turned out later in the hospital Oksana was saved by a miracle, since the stabbing took place at 2 mm from her carotid artery. According to Oksana, her ex-boyfriend was insanely jealous, and when she tried to leave, he threatened her by telling that he would commit a suicide. She could not even think that this man could bring harm to others. He was sentenced to 12 years. Perhaps, this is one in thousands of cases when an offender of domestic violence actually received a substantial sentence. Why is there such a difference between the statistics and actual numbers of domestic violence in Russia? The main problem in the procedure of registering domestic violence is in law enforcement, since this kind of violence doesn’t have a separate category in the constitution of the Russian Federation. As long as the legislation does not adopt a definition of domestic violence, the situation will not change. Also the low number of women actually going to the police should be noted, since many women believe that the police won’t be able to help them, and therefore they rarely file a petition. It is important that the Criminal Code and Administrative Code include the concept of domestic violence. Domestic abuse must incur liability not only in severe cases, such as personal injury and murder, but also in the â€Å"mild† forms of violence, like threats and emotional damage. Also, it is important to transfer domestic violence from the sphere of private charges to the sphere of public accusations, so that it is impossible to take back an application, since while the process is going on – a lot of men convince their women to take back the application, promising them that things will change, and once the application is taken back – the case is dropped, and the cycle of abuse continues. If the case were kept open, the offender would get at least some sort of punishment. And it is definitely necessary to add protection orders; but when this was discussed in the legislature, unfortunately this immediately raised the question of a possible violation of men’s rights. Slide 9 However, it is true that victims of violence are not only women but also men. Unfortunately, there is no exact statistics of the real number of victims. Men as well as women have their own reasons not to report domestic violence. Women are often leaders in their families, but, as psychologists report, are rarely tyrants. According to psychotherapist Alexander Polev, â€Å"If a wife and mother become tyrants – it’s not normal. † â€Å"As a rule, these women are from dysfunctional families, which copy their parents. Tyrants can be oppressed mothers and children – they repeat the situation in exactly same way. † Victims of woman rarely seek psychological help, despite the frequency of the beatings. Experts say that in Russia, of the total number of reported cases of domestic violence – 5% are feature male victims. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of victims of female aggression. For men it is really difficult to accept that they have been beaten by a female: it is considered to be shameful and men often prefer to deal with their trauma alone. But even taking into account the psychological barriers to the recognition by men that they have been domestically violated, domestic violence hotlines a few times still receive calls from men suffering violence in their homes. Psychologists are convinced that for men, fallen under the heel of a strong woman, there is only one solution – a divorce. Separation with their wife-tyrant doesn’t always bring satisfaction and resolution to all their problems. The next shot to follow was a scene of a bunch of tall trees which are most common in LA this to give you a better clue of where the location is. The screen shot shows a few Palm Trees. Many other clues indicates its Hollywood, like the big houses, tall trees, big roads all features of Hollywood. The vehicles head to the mansion where they find a dead body floating face down in a swimming pool. As the cars reach the big house, the speed at which the officers and news reporters jump out of their vehicles, shows the eagerness of them wanting to know the facts of the murder. The camera from an overlook shows the size of the house and police running to the pool of the mansion, where we see a dark object floating. The camera pans at this moment, from the shot of the officers and reports running to the pool, to them overlooking the pool. Also at this point he say maybe youd like to hear the facts, the whole truth, which suggests that he knows the facts/story. The camera then moves from an over view to a closer view. When the camera does get closer, we get a shot of the officers and reports noting and taking pictures of the object in the pool, and the camera focuses on the item as the speed of everything slows down. Out of two shots of the object, we first get a reverse shot of object the detectives and reporters view of the incident (a view as if we are where they are standing). The object in the pool is a man floating face down in the swimming pool of a luxurious mansion. The man, Joe Gillis, is a screenwriter who has been shot and is dead. We then get a second view of the man, which is a front view of the body from inside the pool. We see a blurry image of the police and the reporters taking pictures of the man, along with a few flashes. As this all happening the voice-over is feeding us the story as well, to give us added information. He starts the voice-over as the credits end. He posthumously narrates the events of the last six months, the events that have lead to this tragic conclusion. The narrators voice sounds amused he promises to tell us, in a unique flashback structure, the real story of young screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) and how he ended up face down (with his eyes open) in the villas pool his watery grave. As the scene dissolves to an earlier time, the voice explains: Lets go back about six months and find the day when it all started. From the shot from underwater which changes to the next shot changes, the shot is called a Dissolve, because a dissolve is a blurry image. A dissolve is a convection used to indicate that it is a flashback, to back this up; the voice-over says Lets Go Back. Working in his one-room apartment house, he is interrupted at his typewriter by the doors buzzer and two repo men at the front door with a court order to take his car, a 1946 Plymouth convertible, California license 40 R 116 and who are demanding a $300 payment on his car. Wearing only his bathrobe, he had to think fast and he lied to the men and telling them that a friend borrowed his car (its actually hidden around the block). They threaten to return the next day by noon. From the dissolve from the previous scene we get an Establishing Shot, which is used to tell us where we are. It is also used when an image is blurry (focuses out) and then becomes clear; this shot then shows a long road which is quite similar to the one at the start of the film. From showing the long, busy, city road, the camera pans across to the right, showing the block of flats. As the camera shows the apartment from a distance, we see one window open with the curtains blowing out, this is to indicate to us that somebody is home and we are going to visit that room. The following shot changes to a studio shot from the busy high road. As we see the block of flats the camera zooms in to the room with the open curtain, but the camera doesnt go right into the bedroom. The camera stops by fading out a few metres away from the windows and this is when the studio shot is used with a fading in from the fading out. Finally the camera goes through the window in the studio shot. As this is all happening, the voice-over starts a new paragraph from where he left of before. He describes how he ended up on a hot, sunny day inside a small flat, typing. The music played in the background is a calm, olden day song sound without any words, just music. The voice-over and the music come to an end when somebody presses the door bell. This is when a Break is used, when the bell rings, it means its real time as he stops the voice-over. At first he tries and ignores the door bell and tries to continue typing but the buzzer is pressed continuously which indicates that the people on the other side of the door are in a hurry and want Joe urgently. When we see the screenwriter (Joe), opening the door for two men, we get a Mise-en-sci ne (everything you see in the shot). We see the two men enter through the door with their hats; this is part of the Mise-en-sci ne. The two men push in through the door, without asking, and their voices sound is like a bad guys type (as if its a warning), which gave us a clue of what they are like within the few seconds of seeing them. The way they walk in is another factor of what they are like. They look like repo men looking to take some things, but all they see is a type writer, bed and a few other items. Facial expressions, body language, hands in pocket are all signs of what they are like and their personalities. Their body language towards Joe is threatening. Towards the end of the confession, Joe shows no signs of fear, towards the two men. He just leans against the wall rolling up a paper given to him by the men about his payment for the car. He even talks back when the men threaten him to show he isnt scared by saying You say the cutest things The final shot shows the keys to the car. After watching the opening scenes of Sunset Boulevard, I think this movie attracts the audiences attention, because of the questions put into our heads. Who, what, why, where, when how, are all used as questions. All of these questions are intended to attract us, and make us carry on watching the film. The opening scenes show a person who has been murdered and is floating in a swimming pool. This leaves us with all these questions, like who killed him, why, how etc. We also get an introduction of the movie from a voice-over by a man who we dont see, until the movie begins, this is another example; we want to know who this man is.
